Description
Pic #1 - Pencil sketch.
Pic # 2 - Brightness and contrast reduced. Using the point to point selection tool areas were selected for shading using gradient fills.
Pic # 3 - Further gradient fills to give it the creature a more solid 3 dimensional look.
Pic # 4/5 - Cut out. Smudge brush obscures pencil lines. Coloured, then further RGB adjustments to make the colour more vibrant. Smudge, Burn and Lightness brushes used to paint in details and sheen. Creation of chain (two links repeated)
Pic # 6 - The Chestburster from a previous painting used as a template to create the adult alien head, shifting things around in the alien face and dropping the saturation. More playing around with the RGB to get the black adult alien look.
Pic # 7-9 - Background created using select area tool gradient flood fills. Blurred before adding spotlight effects. Opaque layers of grey for mist. Water droplets were just half a dozen white flecks repeated with motion blur added.
The alien was then colour adjusted from the vived red using a hue adjustement, darkness and de-saturation. Then RGB adjustments and gamma correction, which in combination can bring up some interesting subtle colour variations. So the alien ended up a more traditional colour in the finished piece - which is now up too and can be seen here: [link]
