The big problem with revenge(although I do love it) is that it was the begining of the end for the cybermen. It was the appearence of cybermen who WEREN'T emotionless cyborgs, but could get angry if you insulted them. Well that and the lower than usual budget costumes
Very very cool...this would have made an awesome VHS cover back in the day. I hate to say it but revenge was never a favorite of mine when it came to the cybermen. I usually reserve that for The Tenth Planet or Tomb of the Cybermen.
Yes, Revenge has never really been held in high regard around fandom. I wonder if it's because it's a story sandwiched between classics, and that perhaps it feels a little more like a Troughton story than a Tom Baker one. Personally I've always quite liked it, I find a return to the Ark an enjoyable close to the season and I like the mystery of the space plague of episode one. Kellman and the other human characters are well performed and any story with Harry in it is a bonus.
I love this story too. Not only does it come from one of the strongest series of DW, but has a very good cast and an interesting script. It was also a great idea to go back to the Ark play out another story there/ I never really understood why Revenge is often dismissed. There hasn't been a better Cyberman story since IMO, although Earthshock had a dramatic impact, ROTC had a stronger script and characters with hidden agendas and interesting motivations.
I've never understood why 'Revenge' was criticised so much either. To me it was a really fun story and the Cybermen didn't seem so much like 'men in suits' as they did throughout the eighties. The story was also simple and plausible unlike 'Attack' and 'Silver Nemesis' which were just convoluted messes by the end! I hope the BBC release it on DVD...
Best bit of Silver Nemesis is the opening moments of episode two "Eradicate them!" From there on in it's a confused hotchpotch, made even more unwatchable thanks to its atrocious music. And this was an anniversary story. A real low point, not quite as low as Last of the Timelords or Voyage of the Damned perhaps, but I digress.
