Varga Plant by Harnois75 Varga Plant by Harnois75
Interpretation of the Varga Plant from the Doctor Who teaser - Mission to the Unknown - a single episode that set up events for the epic 12 part Dalek's Masterplan. (1965)

If anyone was snagged by a Varga Thorn they would rapidly lose their reason and become murderous. Death wasn't even an escape from the horror as the corpse of the victim would slowly turn into a new Varga Plant.

Classic Body Horror.

Gah! that is amazing - I've been listening to the I, DAVROS series on repeat for about the last week, and this is just perfect, so so so so so atmospheric - you can almost feel the toxic wasteland seeping through the screen, wonderful, brilliant interpretation of the vargas - I don't know if I'll be able to sleep tonight :D

David Cronenberg eat your heart out...

I'm really digging the atmosphere surrounding this piece, and it's a frightening thought to carry with you before going to bed D:

If Mission to the Unknown had a seperate Target release, this would have been a perfect cover.

Very well done. Absolutely stunning.

I love how you've updated this idea, but still kept the almost noir attitude of the original concept. Can you imagine the living death the victim experienced.?

Yes, I listened to it recently. The Feast of Steven is a weird episode, but the story of the Dalek's Masterplan has some great dramatic moments and set pieces.

Thanks. Sometimes you wish you could add some slithering dragging sound effects to imagery just to add to the chills.

glad to hear that. i love it as well. a lot different than what RTD was doing that last season and i enjoy watching the relationship grow between 11th and Amy along with Rory. i think with time, Matt may even be bigger than Tennant!

Lovely work. I especially like your take on Kembel- truly hellish and godforsaken. Odd, I was just listening to the "Mission to the Unknown" audiobook (good stuff).

Any chance of the Daleks' allies? I've been tempted to take on that subject many times myself, but I'd love to see what you'd do with it. They'd be a great subject for your "unbound" treatment.

Yes I was thinking of doing the delegates conference room, there are some interesting looking aliens in there.

I hadn't listened to Mission to the Unknown until recently but it's a cracking episode, steeped in menace. Pretty grim with the first astronaut infected and shot dead, only to transform whilst the remaining astronauts take refuge inside their craft. Then the arrival of the Dalek space ship over the jungle, and another Varga infection and an extermination. A tense 25 minutes.

Niiiice. If ya have the novellization handy, you might want to check out John Peel's description of the delegates- good inspirational material (it was making me want a crack at 'em). I've always loved the crazy one that looked like a black centipede with a pair of eyes on top. I think that appeared in some of my very first DW art (from back when I was maybe 10 or 11).

And yeah, it's a grim little piece of work- and the soundtrack plays pretty well on audio. It's one of those I suspect would be let down if we still had the visuals to go with it (though that's a problem I'd love to have).
